In recent times Rajasthan has emerged as a major and very rich repository of historical documents for pre-colonial as well as subsequent eras. This book captures the diversity of historical documents primarily available in Rajasthan about the State and other regions. The collection of articles has been divided into four sections. The first section showcases researches based on Pre Colonial documentation like Bahis, archival documents, thikana records, literary documents etc. Papers in section two explore documents available for the Colonial period like administrative reports, official reports, files and print media. It offers fresh insight into British policy as regards the Princely States and British India. The Contemporary section gives readers an insight into the identity politics and dilemmas of development. Fourth and the last section highlights the historical importance of oral testimonies, often known as living memory.

यह आम धारणा है कि सरदार पटेल कांग्रेस के तीन दिग्गजों-महात्मा गांधी, पं. नेहरू और सुभाषचंद्र बोस के खिलाफ थे। किंतु यह मात्र दुष्प्रचार ही है। हाँ कुछ मामलों में-खासकर सामरिक नीति के मामलों में-उनके बीच कुछ मतभेद जरूर थे, पर मनभेद नहीं था। परंतु जैसा कि इस पुस्तक में उद्घाटित किया गया है, सरदार पटेल ने पाकिस्तान को 55 करोड़ रुपए दिए जाने के प्रस्ताव पर गांधीजी का विरोध नहीं किया था; यद्यपि वह समझ गए थे कि ऐसा करने की कीमत चुकानी पड़ेगी। इसी तरह उन्होंने प्रधानमंत्री के रूप में पं. नेहरू के प्रति भी उपयुक्त सम्मान प्रदर्शित किया। उन्होंने ही भारत को ब्रिटिश राष्ट्रमंडल में शामिल करने के लिए पं. नेहरू को तैयार किया था; यद्यपि नेहरू पूरी तरह इसके पक्ष में नहीं थे। जहाँ तक सुभाष चंद्र बोस के साथ उनके संबंधों की बात है, वे सन् 1939 में दूसरी बार सुभाषचंद्र बोस को कांग्रेस का अध्यक्ष चुने जाने के खिलाफ थे। सुभाषचंद्र बोस ने जिस प्रकार सरदार पटेल के बड़े भाई विट्ठलभाई पटेल-जिनका विएना में निधन हो गया था-के अंतिम संस्कार में मदद की थी, उससे दोनों के मध्य आपसी प्रेम और सम्मान की भावना का पता चलता है।

Subhash Chandra Bose Ki Adhoori Atmkatha
सुभाषचंद्र बोस की ‘भारत की खोज’; जवाहरलाल नेहरू की तुलना में उनके जीवन में काफी पहले ही हो गई; यानी उन दिनों वे अपनी किशोरावस्था में ही थे। वर्ष 1912 में पंद्रह वर्षीय सुभाष ने अपनी माँ से पूछा था; ‘स्वार्थ के इस युग में भारत माता के कितने निस्स्वार्थ सपूत हैं; जो अपने निजी स्वार्थ को त्याग कर इस आंदोलन में हिस्सा ले सकते हैं? माँ; क्या तुम्हारा यह बेटा अभी तैयार है?’’ 1921 में भारतीय सिविल सेवा से त्यागपत्र देकर वह आजादी की लड़ाई में कूदने ही वाले थे कि उन्होंने अपने बड़े भाई शरत को पत्र लिखा; ‘‘केवल बलिदान और कष्ट की भूमि पर ही हम अपने राष्ट्र का निर्माण कर सकते हैं।’’ दिसंबर 1937 में बोस ने अपनी आत्मकथा के दस अध्याय लिखे; जिसमें 1921 तक की अपनी जीवन का वर्णन किया था और ‘माई फेथ-फिलॉसोफिकल’ शीर्षक का एक चिंतनशील अध्याय भी था। सदैव ऐसा नहीं होता कि जीवन के बाद के समय में लिखे संस्मरणों को शुरुआती; बचपन के दिनों की प्राथमिक स्रोत की सामग्री के साथ पढ़ा जाए।

A Hindu, to sum up the conclusions arrived at, is he who looks upon the land that extends from Sindhu to Sindhu, from the Indus to the seas, as the land of his forefathers, his pitrabhu, who inherited the blood of that race whose first discernible source is traced to the Vedic Saptasindhus, which, on its onward march, assimilated much that was incorporated and ennobling. The Hindus, who inherited and claimed as their own the culture of that race, as expressed chiefly in their common classic language, Sanskrit, and represented by a common history, a common literature, art and architecture, law and jurisprudence, rites and rituals, ceremonies and sacraments, fairs and festivals, and who, above all, address this land, this Sindhustan, as their punyabhu, as the holy land, the land of their saints and seers, of godmen and gurus, the land of piety and pilgrimage. These are the essentials of Hindutva – a common rashtra, a common jaati, and a common sanskriti. All these essentials could best be summed up by stating in brief that they are Hindu to whom Sindhustan is not only a pitrabhu but also a punyabhu.
