Amethi has long been perhaps India’s highest profile constituency. Billed as ‘karmabhoomi’ of the Nehru–Gandhi family, it has been continually held by the Congress since its inception as a Lok Sabha constituency in 1967, except for half a dozen years in between. Reports in the national media and Congress projections have always shown it as a robust and highly developed area.
However, when Smriti Irani stepped into this constituency as the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate for the 2014 elections, the truth behind the Amethi myth became apparent. Irani was struck by the dereliction of the place and its people. It was neglected, backward and depressed about its future. Amethi had become little more than a political tourist destination that politicians, industrialists, middlemen and the media stepped into and dealt with as they please.
Tracing Irani’s footsteps from her defeat in 2014 to her win in 2019, senior journalist Anant Vijay attempts to understand the reasons behind her success in Amethi, shining a light on both Irani’s personality and her political methods. Through the political history of what was once a Congress bastion, Dynasty to Democracy examines how political parties function in a democracy like ours. Vijay’s book is also a keen study of the RSS’s working style, its strategies and exemplary execution that backed Smriti Irani’s efforts from 2014 to 2019.

About the Author
Anant Vijay has been active in journalism for nearly twenty-five years. His articles on politics, literature and cinema are read across the country. He did BA (Hons) in history from Bhagalpur University and followed it up with a post graduate degree in journalism from University of Delhi. He also holds a postgraduate diploma in business management. He is the author of eleven books. Among these, Prasangvash, Kolahal Kalah Mein, Vidhaaon ka Vinyaas, Bollywood Selfie, Loktantra ki Kasauti and Marxvaad ka Ardhsatya have been quite well received. लौह पुरुष सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल का जन्म नडियाद, गुजरात में हुआ। उनकी शिक्षा मुख्यतः स्वाध्याय से ही हुई। लंदन जाकर उन्होंने बैरिस्टर की पढ़ाई पूरी की और वापस आकर गुजरात के अहमदाबाद में वकालत करने लगे। महात्मा गांधी के विचारों से प्रेरित होकर वे भारत के स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन से पूरी तरह जुड़ गए। स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन में सरदार पटेल का सबसे पहला और बड़ा योगदान खेड़ा आंदोलन में रहा। बारदोली में सशक्त सत्याग्रह करने के लिए ही उन्हें ‘सरदार’ कहा जाने लगा। सरदार पटेल को 1937 तक दो बार कांग्रेस का सभापति बनने का गौरव प्राप्त हुआ। आजादी के बाद भारत के राजनीतिक एकीकरण में उनके महान् योगदान के लिए इतिहास उन्हें सदैव स्मरण रखेगा। अपनी दृढ़ता के कारण वे ‘लौह पुरुष’ कहलाए। सरदार पटेल स्वतंत्र भारत के उप-प्रधानमंत्री होने के साथ प्रथम गृह, सूचना तथा रियासत विभाग के मंत्री भी थे। उनकी महानतम देन है 562 छोटी-बड़ी रियासतों का भारतीय संघ में विलय करना। वे नवीन भारत के निर्माता, राष्ट्रीय एकता के बेजोड़ शिल्पी और भारतीय जनमानस अर्थात् किसान की आत्मा थे। अपने रणनीतिक कौशल, राजनीतिक दक्षता और अदम्य इच्छा-शक्ति के बल पर भारत को एक नई पहचान देनेवाले समर्पित इतिहास-पुरुष की प्रेरणाप्रद जीवनी।.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose (PB)
स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के क्रांतिदूत नेताजी सुभाषचंद्र बोस का जन्म 23 जनवरी, 1897 को उड़ीसा के कटक शहर में हुआ था। बचपन से ही सुभाष पढ़ाई में बडे़ कुशाग्र बुद्धि के थे। इंग्लैंड से पढ़ाई करके लौटने पर सुभाष कलकत्ता के प्रसिद्ध स्वतंत्रता सेनानी देशबंधु चित्तरंजन दास के साथ काम करना चाहते थे। उन दिनों गांधीजी ने अंग्रेजों के खिलाफ असहयोग आंदोलन छेड़ रखा था। उनके साथ सुभाष बाबू उस आंदोलन में सहभागी हो गए और जल्द ही देश के एक महत्त्वपूर्ण युवा नेता बन गए। सन् 1928 में जब साइमन कमीशन भारत आया तो कलकत्ता में सुभाष बाबू ने इस आंदोलन का नेतृत्व किया। सुभाष बाबू गांधीजी और कांग्रेस के तौर-तरीकों से असहमत थे। गांधीजी के विरोध के बावजूद वे कांग्रेस के अध्यक्ष चुने गए, पर कार्यकारिणी का सहयोग न मिलने पर उन्होंने त्याग-पत्र दे दिया। नजरबंदी में ब्रिटिश सरकार की आँखों में धूल झोंककर वे जापान पहुँचे और आजाद हिंद फौज की स्थापना की। उन्होंने नारा दिया-‘तुम मुझे खून दो, मैं तुम्हें आजादी दूँगा।’ उन्होंने भारत की आजादी के लिए सशस्त्र संघर्ष किया। सुभाष की राष्ट्रभक्ति बेमिसाल है। उनकी मृत्यु के बारे में अभी तक रहस्य बना हुआ है। कहा जाता है कि 23 अगस्त, 1945 को उनका विमान दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हो गया था। राष्ट्रनायक सुभाष बाबू आज भी अदम्य प्रेरणा के स्रोत हैं।

When I came into this world, God sent me here possibly on a sort of life-sentence. It was the span of life allotted to me by time to stay in this ‘prison-house of life’. This story is but a chapter of that book of life, which is a longer story not yet ended.
You can finish reading the book in a day, while I had to live it for 14 long years of transportation. And if the story is so tiresome, unendurable and disgusting to you, how much must have been the living of it for me! Every moment of those 14 years in that jail has been an agony of the soul and the body to me, and to my fellow convicts in that jail. It was not only fatiguing, unbearable and futile to us all, it was equally or more excruciating to them as to me. And it is only that you may know it and feel the fatigue, the disgust and the pain of it as we have felt it, that I have chosen to write it for you.
