Bhakti And The Bhakti Movement: A New Perspective
English Books, अध्यात्म की अन्य पुस्तकें, इतिहास, सही आख्यान (True narrative)Bhakti And The Bhakti Movement: A New Perspective
This book makes a total departure from some well-established notions about bhakti and the Bhakti movement. It questions and rejects the current academic definition of bhakti and the portrayals of the Bhakti movement in the light of that definition. Trying to recapture the generic meaning of the term bhakti, the author postulates that bhakti by itself does not suggest any ideational or doctrinaire position. According to her, a restricted and erroneous definition of bhakti has served as the substratum for all theorisations about the Bhakti movement, when taken as a whole. What is reckoned as the Bhakti movement, she states, is an amalgam of a number of devotional movements of a divergent nature. A monolithic view of these can be taken only if their common denominator bhakti is understood in its generic sense. Not otherwise. In short, the author has called into question the whole conceptual framework and the basic terms of reference used hitherto for the study of bhakti and the Bhakti movement. This is significant since they have had the sanction of more than one hundred years of scholarship, and have not been questioned till now. She has done so on the strength of her being able to trace back the origins of the errors she has underlined. The author has tried to establish the fact that the accepted academic definition of bhakti is a modern construction; and that it was artificially formulated by certain Western Indologists of the nineteenth century with the aid of criteria which had no relevance in the context of Hinduism. The process of its formulation has been examined historiographically in this critique to show how it had gradually taken shape between 1846 and 1909. The reasons for its subsequent incorporation in modern Indian scholarship have also been made clear. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach in this book, Dr. Sharma has grappled with many vital issues related to the Bhakti theme. It is hoped that this erudite work would serve as a landmark in the study of bhakti and the Bhakti movement.

This book showcases the stunning achievements of Indian civilization. There has been an unprecedented upsurge of interest in our ancient heritage, which sparkles with the unmatched brilliance of pre-eminent Maharishis, who fathomed the many mysteries of the universe and the earth, millennia before the scientists and savants of the Western civilization did. The sages served as lighthouses of wisdom, in a world steeped in barbarity and darkness, doing much to uplift humankind from its primitive limitations, besides preserving Sanatan Dharma.

Bombay after Ayodhya : A City in Flux
The demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on 6 December 1992 was followed by riots across India. Mumbai had always been susceptible to communal violence, but the violence in December 1992 and then again in January 1993 was unprecedented. Two months later, in March, serial blasts rocked the city, killing over 250 and injuring 700. Communal strife was followed by gang wars and natural calamities, all of which changed the city forever.
Bombay after Ayodhya chronicles how the past three decades have been a period of unprecedented flux in Mumbai. In the aftermath of the riots, a split in the Mumbai underworld led to new equations in politics, which changed the demography of the city and led to the rise of new townships. After a brief lull, blasts and terrorist attacks rocked it once more in 2002, a cycle of violence that culminated in the horrific 26/11 attacks in 2008.
Jitendra Dixit grew up in Mumbai and has reported from the city for much of the three decades he writes about in this book. This is a deeply felt biography of a city, which has transformed from a city of mills to one of malls, where the number of skyscrapers has multiplied along with their height, where local trains have become longer and yet remained overcrowded. It is the city of Bollywood, yet constraints of producing films in the city have led filmmakers to move out. Its iconic festivals, such as Ganesh Utsav and Govinda, once primarily celebrated by the poor and the middle class, have become commercialized.
Along with key events and people that have shaped the evolution of present-day Mumbai, Bombay after Ayodhya also documents the change in the city’s character, from its physical appearance and civic issues, to real estate and politics.

Challenges of Understanding History
The history of India, so far, has not focused on a civilizational Bharatiya perspective, emphasizing a geo-political history based on the Nation-state paradigm, rather than a geo-cultural practice based on India’s civilizational antiquity.
Until recently, history had been viewed from various ideological lenses- Colonial, Nationalist, Marxist, Subaltern, soon and so forth. These schools have been immensely successful not only in tapping the immense range of sources and exploring the various regions and sub-regions across the subcontinent, but have also contributed towards bringing to light important perspectives concerning the political, economic, social and cultural developments in the history of India from the 8th to the 14th centuries.
While tapping into these schools has its obvious advantages, in that they have focused on partial aspects of the grand march of the civilization’s history, a lot still needs to be done.SKU: n/a -

Chanakya Neeti (English)
Chanakya was An Indian teacher, philosopher and royal Advisor. He managed the first Maurya emperor Chandragupta’s rise to power at a young age. He is widely credited for having played an important role in the establishment of the Maurya Empire, which was the first empire in archaeologically recorded history to rule most of the Indian subcontinent.
Chanakya is traditionally identified as Kautilya or Vishnu Gupta, who authored the ancient Indian poltical treatise called Arthasastra. As such, he is considered as the pioneer of the field of economics and political science in India, and his work is thought of as an important precursor to Classical Economics.
Chanakya Neeti is a treatise on the ideal way of life, and shows Chanakya’s deep study of the Indian way of life. Chanakya also developed Neeti-Sutras (aphorisms-pithy sentences) that tell people how they should behave. Of these well-known 455 sutras, about 216 refer to rajaneeti (the do, s and don’ts of running a kingdom). Apparently, Chanakya used these sutras to groom Chandragupta and other selected disciples in the art of ruling a kingdom.SKU: n/a -

Purāņas are the treasure house of knowledge. The Paurāņika literature is encyclopedic and it includes diverse topics such as cosmogony, cosmology, genealogies of gods & goddesses, kings sages, demigods, folk tales, pilgrimages, temples, medicine, astronomy, grammar, mineralogy, theology and philosophy.
The number of Purāṇas are eighteen. The Bhavisya Purāņa is the embodiment of knowledge of Present, Past and Future. It seems it has been written by sage Vyāsa at the end of all seventeen Purāņas.
Bhavisya Purāna is adorned with fourteen vidyās (knowledge) of the four Vedas, the six Angas of the Vedas, Dharmaśāstra, Mīmāṁsā, Tarka or Nyāya and other Purāņas. In addition to these fourteen vidyās, this Purāņa contains four other vidyās such asĀyurveda, Dhanurveda, Gandharvaveda and Arthaśāstra.
Bhavisya Purāņa has been divided into four parvas, 1. Brāhma Parva, 2. Madhyama Parva, 3. Pratisarga Parva, 4. Uttara Parva. Brāhma Parva deals with the stories of gods and goddesses, but on the whole the emphasis on this parva is praising and worshipping Sungod with merits of listening to his glory, performing his holy vratas (vows) and observing his fast. Madhyama Parva of the Bhavisya Purāņa is primarily a Tantra-related work. It has been divided into three parts. Third Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavișya Purāņa is a treasure of Indian history of Medieval period in which future incidents have been presented in past tense. The last parva of the Bhavisya Purāņa is Uttara Parva. This parva is the treasure of Karmakāņda and charities observing festivity.
The present edition of Bhavişya Purāņa is the first ever complete English translation of the original Sanskrit text in devanāgarī that also includes an exhaustive introduction, notes and an index of Sanskrit verses at the end of third volume of this book.

Complete Vedas Set of 9
The word ‘Veda’ means ‘knowledge’ and is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘vid’, means ‘to know’. It does not refer to one single literary work, but indicates a huge corpus of literature, which arose in the course of many centuries and has been handed down from one generation to another generation by verbal transmission. ‘Veda’ is also called ‘Shruti’ meaning what is heard, as opposed to the ‘Smriti’ composed by sages at a later stage recounting the content of the Vedic texts. This referes the purely oral-aural method which was (and is) used for it.
